Hailey coxswain guides Exeter to title

In prep school finals

Marlow Mizer

Hailey’s Marlow Mizer must know how to give directions.

The daughter of James and Jacalyn Mizer was the coxswain of the winning Phillips Exeter varsity men’s eight-man boat Saturday, May 25 at the Northeast Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships (NEIRAS) on Lake Quinsigamond in Massachusetts.

Over 1,400 athletes competed on a six-lane 1,500-meter course. The Phillips Exeter Academy's boy's varsity No. 1, coxed by Marlow Mizer, won its class in 4:16.983 minutes. Their closest competition was Kent (4:20.593 minutes).

It was the first gold win Exeter’s boys since 2008.

Mizer has been recruited to the University of Washington, NCAA Division 1, as a women's crew coxswain in the fall of 2013. The coxswain is the person in charge of the navigation and steering of a boat, sitting in either the bow of stern and verbally issuing instructions.

A graduating member of the Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) Class of 2013, Mizer learned coxing on the Exeter women’s team and transitioned to the men’s crew team this spring.

Having grown up in the Wood River Valley, Mizer started attending Exeter in the 10th grade. Graduation ceremonies at Phillips Exeter take place Sunday, June 9.
