Sprinter Keys signs with BSU

State 100m, 200m king

Wood River High School state champion sprinter Ian Keys has signed a letter of commitment to join the Boise State University track and field team in the 2013-14 school year.

     Jeff Keys, Ian’s father, said BSU assistant track coach Derrick Jackson emailed Ian shortly after the 18-year-old sprinter from Bellevue ended his high school track career during the State 4A track and field meet May 18 at Eagle.

     On that day Keys became the first Wood River male athlete to ever win a state 100-meter dash championship. He added the 200m state title later on the final day of the 96th annual Idaho High School Track and Field Championships.

     Jeff Keys said coach Jackson congratulated graduating senior Ian Keys for his achievement and told him BSU wanted him to join the Broncos team. By Wednesday, May 22, Ian had signed the letter of commitment, his father said.

     In his final prep races Keys easily won the State 4A 100m dash in a wind-aided 10.85 seconds and capturing the 200m dash in 22.07 seconds, again with a wind factor.

     Those times approximated the Hailey school records Keys set at the state-qualifying Great Basin Conference meet in Twin Falls May 8-9 when he won 100m and 200m dashes in 10.80 and 22.07 seconds.

     Ian is the youngest of three sons of Jeff and Sheila Keys. His older brothers are Austin, 24, and Andre, 21, a BSU junior. For 28 years the Keys family operated two restaurants in Ketchum, starting with Soupcon in June 1985 and operating Vintage for 10 years before selling it recently.

     Although Ian was the first Wolverine male athlete to win a state sprint title, there have been Wood River female winners at the 100m distance.

     Hailey girls had achieved three consecutive state girls’ 100m dash titles under coach John Hopkins from 1984-86.

               They were senior Lisa Bernhagen at 12.63 seconds in 1984, senior Nicole Terra tying for first with Kellogg’s Chris Lancour at 12.77 seconds in 1985, and junior Amy Engelbert (12.93) in 1986.
