A new Sun Valley Co. laundry facility is now up and running and resort spokesman Jack Sibbach says it will become 100 percent operational next week.

The 21,500-square-foot facility replaces the resort’s former laundry building, a 1940s-era structure that burned down in February 2012. The new facility is designed to increase the resort’s ability to process laundry in a more time- and energy-efficient manner.

According to the resort, it located the facility to minimize transportation to other resort facilities and designed it to reduce the resort’s carbon footprint. The building is located at the intersection of Trail Creek Road and Hospital Road in Sun Valley.

“State-of-the-art laundry equipment has been installed throughout the facility, which includes a large-capacity “tunnel washer” that recycles water through five cycles, saving 75 percent of the amount of water compared to standard commercial laundry systems,” the release states.

The recycling system also reduces soap and other chemical use, the resort said.

The laundry equipment is driven by a “sophisticated” twin 150-horsepower steam-boiler system, along with two air compressors. The resort said the system is capable of washing three times the laundry capacity that the resort currently requires. The facility also maximizes natural day lighting to minimize the need for energy-consuming artificial lighting. The facility’s powered lighting includes “extremely efficient” induction, fluorescent and LED lighting, the resort said.

Though the building is reaching full operational capacity, some work still needs to be done to complete the project. Sibbach said the parking lot still needs to be paved.

The resort is currently using the building for uniform storage and distribution, laundry and dry cleaning, and as a “staging” area for its 160-person housekeeping staff. The resort may extend use of the facility outside of the company some day.

“Plans for the future include offering services to the public,” a resort news release states.
