Green Wave discus thrower

Cheyenne Swanson

Two-time Idaho State 4A discus champion Cheyenne Swanson was one of nine Tulane University track and field student-athletes recently named to the Conference USA Academic List for classroom achievements in 2012-13.

Green Wave freshman Swanson, 18, a 2012 Wood River High School graduate from Hailey, made the prestigious list that honors students achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better. A total 539 student-athletes in Conference USA earned Academic List rating.

Based in Irving, Tex., the 18-year-old Conference USA currently has 12 member schools based in the South playing nine men’s sports and 11 women’s sports. They are Tulane,
Rice University, Southern Methodist, Texas-El Paso, Tulsa, Houston, Marshall, Alabama-Birmingham, East Carolina, Memphis, Southern Mississippi and Central Florida.

Swanson, a daughter of Rob and Amy Swanson, threw the discus a personal-record 130-9 in placing fourth in the South Alabama Invitational at Mobile April 13. She placed 18th at 121-5 in the Conference USA Outdoor finals May 11 in Houston.

At Wood River she was a three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball, track) and holds the school record in discus. She won back-to-back state discus titles with throws of 115-11 and 115-9 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. She was also a key player on back-to-back Wolverine district championship girls’ basketball teams in 2011-12.
