The Sawtooth United F.C. (SUFC) boys’ U-12 soccer team put an exclamation mark on the competitive spring soccer season by winning its class in the Idaho Directors Cup tournament last weekend in Boise.

U-12 team results included an overall record of 12-1-1, a second-place finish at the Pocatello Spring Classic tournament in Pocatello, and championship titles at the Twin Falls Canyon Rim Classic and Idaho Directors Cup.

At Boise, the team showed up ready to play and willing to face all challengers in the eight-team division.

The SUFC boys rolled through the “A Bracket” pool play with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring opponents 22-2.

It wasn’t until the final championship match on Sunday that the Wood River team was truly tested when it played a defiant Boise NOVA Cruyff squad that wasn’t going to go away easy.

Most of the championship match was staged in the midfield with both teams testing the other’s defense. Play was equal until midway through the first half when Chandler Stevens served Lucas Beste with a well-placed pass that allowed Beste to find an opening in the Cruyff defense and penetrate to the goal.

Forcing the Cruyff keeper to commit, Beste was able to find the back of the net with a touch shot to the corner.

Both teams worked to increase their attacks with aggressive play in the second half but Beste’s goal secured the 1-0 victory and championship title for the SUFC U-12 crew.

A solid team effort contributed to the weekend success, as has been the case all season.

The strong defensive back line proved to be the key element to the team’s overall success. Standout defensive performances came from Jake Albright, Jack Keating, Colton Donovan and Jhonatan Yallico.

Goal scorers included Lucas Beste, Colton Donovan, Mario Macias, Liam McGonigal, Peter Morawitz, Chandler Stevens and Jack Wojcik.

There were strong performances and precision passing from the hard charging mid-fielders and strikers—Luke Worst, Will Penrose, Barrett Ott, Jordon Schoen and Yancey Egoavil. Defending the goal well was And as always our goal was the keeper crew led by Barrett Ott, Mario Macias and Liam McGonigal.
