Youth Commission to host event for teens

Summer Kickoff Dance scheduled for June 1 in Sun Valley

The Sun Valley Youth Council Commission will host a Summer Kickoff Dance on Saturday, June 1, from 8-11 p.m. at Elkhorn Springs Restaurant in Sun Valley.
The dance is open to eighth- through 12th-graders in Blaine County and to visitors in the same age group. The commission requires ID for entry. Tickets cost $3 if purchased ahead or $5 at the door. Email svyouthevents@gmail.com for tickets.
The dance is the nine-member commission’s inaugural event. The group, which includes youth representatives from across Blaine County, serves to advise the city’s officials on matters that concern young people. Community School junior Taylor Adler, the commission’s president, pitched the concept to Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe last spring, and the City Council approved assembly of the commission shortly after.
“I am gratified that the Sun Valley mayor and council, through the establishment of this Youth Council Commission, have given a voice to youths in our community,” Adler said. “With this voice, we have demonstrated that we can take the responsibility to make a difference for all youths.”
At a council meeting on Thursday, March 7, Adler and commission Vice President Chase Hutchinson, a junior at Wood River High School, presented a proposal to the council that included a concern that the Sun Valley area does not offer enough drug- and alcohol-free activities “of interest” to teens.  The council agreed that the commission should organize such an event.
Adler and Hutchinson did not request city funds to do so. They said revenues from ticket sales should cover costs.
At a council meeting on May 2, Councilwoman Michelle Griffith—the commission’s advisor—said the commission had partnered with the nonprofit Blaine County Community Drug Coalition to sponsor the event. According to Griffith, the partnership ensures that the city and the commission have done everything possible to keep the event sober and protects them from liability should any illicit shenanigans take place.
“Students should attend the dance because it’s something fun, different and positive to do and includes other students from around the Wood River Valley,” Adler said.
