School board seat on Tuesday ballot

Incumbent Guthrie challenged by community volunteer Baker

     Voters in Zone 2 of the Blaine County School District will decide on Tuesday, May 21, to re-elect Trustee Steve Guthrie to another four-year term or to replace him with new candidate Kathy Baker.

     Guthrie was first elected to a four-year term in 2009. Since July of 2011, he has served as board chairman. He is employed as the airport security coordinator at Friedman Memorial Airport.

     “My intent for re-election is based on my strong belief that all students enrolled in Blaine County Schools are provided with opportunities to succeed and become educated, respectful, compassionate and tolerant adults,” Guthrie wrote in a statement to the Idaho Mountain Express. “Continued efforts of transparency, community engagement and the completion of BCSD’s Strategic Plan must also be a priority.”

     Baker is a newcomer to School District politics but has been active as a volunteer for the past several years in district activities and frequently attends school board meetings. Baker describes herself as a “community volunteer, full-time mother of three amazing boys and Hailey PTA co-president.”

     “I am running for school board to ensure our schools provide the best educational experiences for our children while maintaining fiscal responsibility to stakeholders,” Baker wrote in a statement to the Express. “My experience demonstrates my ability, passion and dedication to obtaining the best education possible for all children in our community.”

     Only voters in Zone 2, which encompasses the southern Hailey area and rural areas extending south toward Bellevue, can vote in the election. Zone maps are available at the district website at www.blaineschools.org under the “Board of Trustees” tab.

     The polls will be open on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Polling places by precinct were printed on Page A17 of the May 15 edition of the Express. Voting information can also be found at the Blaine County website, at www.blainecounty.org at the “Where do I Vote” link.
