The Way I See It

Summer … now what?

     You know, when the temperature hits 95 degrees three times in a row in Boise, you really have to accept the fact that the warm season everybody has been talking about since the snow melted in the back yard is here. Finally, we have to admit all those articles in the paper on the preparation for the summer season have to be digested, swallowed and paid attention to now, that is, unless you want to fall behind “The Joneses.” I have just finished reading them all and it occurs to me that if I follow all their tips and advice it would only cost me about $5,000 to $6,000 and a couple of trips to the emergency room to get started.

     I don’t know about you but after this marvelous slack season with little or no income, I find myself shy of funds, a tad financially embarrassed and up the Silver Creek without a paddle. Hey, it’s not that I’m discouraged because many lucrative projects loom in the horizon for yours truly. It’s just that now is not the time for major investments in lawn care, tire rotations and the purchase of hiking gear, etc.

     I just got out of a meeting with myself in which it was decided that several longstanding projects for the summer season would have to be curtailed, if you will, for the betterment of … me. It was decided that the pool and the bed-and-breakfast inn in the back yard I had proposed at the last meeting will have to be put on hold until the rent is paid on the cabin in front—a tough sacrifice to be sure, but one by which I will have to live with until the 15th of September or the “12th of never.” Further, the purchase of new tires, a paved driveway, the new lawn equipment, a gas barbecue, the second-hand outdoor patio furniture ensemble and “berm” development have been put on hold for the time being.

     Instead, I plan to make due with a fire pit, four “tiki torches” and a hose. What’s the matter with that? There’s a lot of money to be saved by merely ignoring any and all suggestions of improving one’s summer experience here in the Wood River Valley. I’m here to help.
