The Sun Valley Police Department has hired three new patrol officers, two with U.S. military experience and one with extensive backcountry skills.
At a City Council Meeting on May 2, Mayor Dewayne Briscoe announced the new hires, officers Issac Goodrich, Daniel Frattura, and Tuyen Nguyen. Goodrich began working for the department earlier this month. Interim Police Chief Walt Femling said Frattura started this week and that Nguyen’s start date is still “up in the air,” but will be soon.
At the meeting, Femling said Goodrich has served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on two overseas tours of duty, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, where he was a platoon commander.
“He stood out from other applicants because of his leadership skills,” Femling said.
Femling said Goodrich grew up in the Magic Valley, graduated from Filer High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Briscoe said, “From your looks, you can be my bodyguard any time,” in reference to Goodrich’s build as the officer strolled into the council chambers to introduce himself (Briscoe had invited him to do so).
Femling said Frattura has worked previously as a park ranger, and his experience in the outdoors will strengthen the city’s backcountry law enforcement and emergency response efforts. Frattura said he was raised in Philadelphia, Pa.
Femling said Nguyen has served as a U.S. Army National Guard combat medic, including experience in Afghanistan. According to Femling, Nguyen recently graduated from the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls’ Law Enforcement Training Program. Femling said Nguyen grew up in Twin Falls after his parents relocated the family there from Vietnam when Nguyen was a young child.
Femling said in the interview that the three positions were open because two former officers took other jobs earlier this year and a third officer will be leaving on July 28 to return to school in pursuit of a different career path. Femling sent out a request for applications in January and said he received about 50 applications, “tested” 28 candidates and interviewed five of them before selecting Fraturra, Goodrich and Nguyen.
Members of the public present at the meeting gave the new officers an enthusiastic round of applause.
