Track athletes qualify for state in Twin

WRHS starts off well in distances

     A blend of Idaho’s best and most unpredictable spring weather—warm and pleasant temperatures buffeted by clouds and lightning—greeted Great Basin Conference track and field athletes Wednesday on Day One of the 4A District 4 track meet in Twin Falls.

     Hailey’s Wood River High School joined athletes from Twin Falls, host Canyon Ridge, Jerome, Burley and Minico of Rupert to determine the top four individuals in each event and fastest two relay teams headed to the State 4A competition May 17-18 at Eagle High.

     Longtime Wood River assistant coach J.C. Nemecek said about the Hailey boys and girls, “It was an excellent day for both of our teams, with 14 personal records set. The athletes were relaxed and spirited.”

     Qualifying for further state competition by placing second in the 3200-meter runs Wednesday were Wood River senior Chase England and junior Haley Montgomery (10:15.20 personal best). Also qualifying with his fourth-place 3200m finish at Canyon Ridge was sophomore Alexis Gonzalez.

     Advancing to Thursday’s sprint finals based on their qualifying times Wednesday were senior Ian Keys in the 100m and 200m dashes, and senior Nicole Pratt in the 300m intermediate hurdles. Advancing with PRs were sophomore Kyle Mungall 400m (54.7) and junior Emilia Bingham 100m high hurdles (18.6 seconds).

     The Wolverine girls’ sprint medley relay team placed fourth in Wednesday’s final with a personal-best time of 2:05.1. On the team were junior Emily Todd, freshman Brooke Sundholm, junior Lexi Browne and sophomore Kenya Schott.

     Other personal bests:

     Cameron Bingham 400m (55.8); Nick Bell (34-3) and Buck Horn (31-8) shotput; Lexi Browne 200m (29.0); Chloe Lichtenberg 100m (15.1) and 200m (30.9); Kenya Schott 400m (1:06.3), Emily Todd 100m (14.7) and Mia Uhrig discus (54-1).
