Prepare for summer exhibition with free talks
In anticipation of its summer exhibition on Japanese printmaking and American art, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is offering two art history presentations on Orientalism, when artists from the 19th century looked to Asia for inspiration.
“Orientalism from Eugène Delacroix to Arthur Wesley Dow,” hosted by Center staff Courtney Gilbert and Kristin Poole, will be held on two successive Wednesdays—May 8, tonight, and on May 15, both at 5:30 p.m. at The Center in Ketchum.
Members can attend either lecture for $10 or sign up for both for $15. Non-member cost is $15 per lecture. No advance ticket purchase is necessary—just pay at the door.
The lectures will trace the relationship between Asian and Western art in the 19th century, from the paintings of Delacroix and Ingres that romanticized the Middle East to the work of artists such as Monet, Gauguin, Whistler and Arthur Wesley Dow, who looked to Asian art for aesthetic inspiration.
The lectures will set the stage for The Center’s summer exhibition, “Floating World: The Influence of Japanese Printmaking,” on display from June 14 to Aug. 24.

Magic Lantern goes ‘live’ one more time
The Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum will finish out its Thursday night film series on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. with the New York Philharmonic “Live in Pyongyang, North Korea.”
The New York Philharmonic performed an historic concert in North Korea conducted by Lorin Maazel on Feb. 26, 2008, which was a significant event in North Korea-United States relations. The orchestra played in East Pyongyang Grand Theatre with the entire concert broadcast on North Korean state television.
Music became diplomacy when Maazel and the philharmonic opened the concert with both the American and the North Korean national anthems.
The program includes music by Wagner, Dvorák, Gershwin, Bizet and Bernstein. This musical project also united Korean and American musicians. The musicians barely spoke to one another, communicating in exchanged glances and body language, and when Maazel raised his baton at the end of the concert and the orchestra embarked on “Arirang,” a lilting folk song emblematic of the North and South Korean people, the audience was obviously touched.
The performance is 115 minutes and includes: Richard Wagner: “Lohengrin, Prelude to Act III”; Antonin Dvorak: “Symphony No.9 in E minor ‘From the New World’”; George Gershwin: “An American in Paris”; George Bizet: “Farandole from L’Arlesienne Suite No.2”; Leonard Bernstein: “Candide, Ouverture, Traditional: Arirang.”
Tickets are $10 for Sun Valley Center for the Arts members and $12 for non-members and are available at the cinema box office.
Health spa helps cancer fight

Early-birds to Sturtevant’s in Hailey can get light tune-ups and safety checks starting at 11:20 a.m. A variety of easy rides will be offered starting at noon and a barbecue will start at 2:30 p.m.
The events are free.
Later that evening, head to the Liberty Theater in Hailey at 6 p.m., where $10 gets you access to beer from the Sawtooth Brewery and biking films. This is a fundraiser for the Wood River Bike Coalition.

Auditions for ‘West Side Story’ set
The Summer Theater Project, a program for high school teens and young adults in their early 20s sponsored by St. Thomas Playhouse, is holding auditions for the classic musical “West Side Story.”
Auditions will be at St. Thomas Church in Sun Valley on Monday, May 13, and Tuesday, May 14, from 4-7 p.m. In addition, there will be another opportunity to audition on Wednesday, May 15, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Community Campus, Room 301, in Hailey. Auditions will be conducted on a first-come-first-served basis; no previous experience is required.
Future thespians should prepare a song and will be asked to read scenes from the show. Copies of the scenes are available in the St. Thomas office. Rehearsals begin immediately after casting and a strong commitment is required from all participants.
“West Side Story” will run from June 19-22 at the Community School Theater. This musical, based on “Romeo and Juliet,” is a tragic love story of Tony and Maria, who are caught in the middle of violence between two rival gangs.

Get ready for another MASSV return
MASSV, Music & Arts Showcase Sun Valley, returns to Ketchum July 5-6 at Sun Valley Resort’s River Run recreation area, in conjunction with the Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival.
Headliners for MASSV 2013 will include national touring acts Krewella and Gramatik with several more bands, musicians, DJs and artists to fill an exciting two days of cutting-edge sounds, music and art.
