Helping to keep the valley beautiful

Annual ERC Clean Sweep event set for Saturday

By EXPRESS STAFF

Already providing signs of college worthiness, more than 100 College Aspiration Scholars from Bellevue Elementary School have assisted with the Environmental Resource Center’s annual Clean Sweep for the last three years, cleaning up their adopted three miles of the Wood River Bike Trail between the gas station on the south end and Power Engineers on the north end.
This year, Krista Jones, technology education teacher at Bellevue Elementary, has recruited roughly 30 middle-school students to the effort. These students had participated while at Bellevue Elementary, and now want to stay involved, even though they have changed schools.
This year, the group of students does their clean-up on Friday May 10, the day before ERC’s Clean Sweep event on Saturday, May 11.
Clean Sweep is the one event each year when the valley community turns out to clean up the valley’s towns and the bike path. The ERC, organizer of the event for 19 years, is looking for volunteers to support the event on Saturday. To join, go to one of several registration sites to collect bags, gloves and maps, talk about coverage areas, grab a donut, and then fan out to pick up the winter’s leavings of litter.
Registration locations are at Atkinson Park for Ketchum and Sun Valley participants, Memorial Park in Bellevue, and Hop Porter Park for Hailey volunteers.
Regroup from noon-1p.m. for lunch donated by KB’s and The Sawtooth Club. Prizes for categories such as Best Team Spirit, Most Bags Collected by an Individual, Widest Age Span of a Team, and Weirdest Item Found will be awarded and everyone will be eligible for a raffle prizes from local businesses.
Workers can also enter a drawing for a 2013-14 Nordic Pass from the Blaine County Recreation District. Also this year in Hailey, the 5B Recycles team will be on hand offering information about local recycling options; Mountain Rides will be signing people up for the new Hailey Bike Share program; and Hilex Poly, the plastic bag recyclers from Jerome, will explain the new types of plastic that they recycle from valley collection bins.
And, thanks to an ERC partnership with Cox Communications, Friday, May 10, will be a special day of recycling from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Cox is offering a free drop-off event to help de-clutter a home or business.
Bring electronics (no TVs) for recycling and sensitive documents for shredding and recycling.  There will also be collection bins for glass, paper, plastic and cans, plus plastic bags. Cox Communications’ office is located at 340 Lewis St. in Ketchum.
Participation is free. Youth and business groups should give the ERC notification that they are participating.
For more information, call 726-4333 or email lhorton@ercsv.org.

Thumbs up!
Bellevue technology teacher Krista Jones has led students in the Clean Sweep for the past three years, and now those kids are coming back from middle school to aid in the effort.
