Baseball team pushes ‘Cats to the limit

Burley nips WRHS 4-2

     High school baseball season came to an end for the Wood River High School varsity with a strong effort in a loser-out game of the Great Basin Conference tournament Thursday, May 2 on the Burley diamond.

     No. 5-seeded Burley (6-19) slipped past upset-minded Wood River (1-22) by a score of 4-2. Wolverine coach Matt Nelson said about his players, “They came out ready to play and stayed ready for the full seven-inning ball game.”

     Senior workhorse Tim Boyle (4 K, 1 BB) went six strong innings and yielded only seven hits. “Tim kept us in the game,” said Nelson. “We had a rough season full of ups and downs but the boys played with heart and determination.”

     At the plate seniors Nick Brunker and Ben Williams did their best to extend the season with two hits and an RBI apiece as Wood River out-hit Burley 9-7. Junior center fielder Finn Isaacson made the play of the year with a diving catch in a bases-loaded situation.

     Nelson said, “The future is looking bright. Three freshmen (Nic Tidwell, Alec Nordsieck and Dylan Broman) started in the final game. Junior Gray David reached base twice and made a great play in the outfield. We made strides for the development of our players.”

     The No. 2-seeded Minico Spartans (18-6) defeated top-seeded Twin Falls (18-6) in Saturday’s semi-final to secure a State 4A tournament berth.

 

Sign up for Nelson Memorial golf

     Sign-ups are being accepted for the third annual James Nelson Memorial golf tournament fundraiser presented by the Wood River Baseball and Softball Association (WRBSA).

     The Nelson Memorial will begin Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m. at The Valley Club. Check-in takes place at noon. Proceeds will benefit the WRBSA as well as the Zachary and Andrew Nelson College Fund.

     Format is scramble, teams of four, with prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin and for the teams with the best and worst scores.

     Cost is $150 per golfer or $560 per team, which is the same as last year. The fee includes 18 holes of golf with cart, appetizers and no-host bar following play. Non-golfers for $10 can join the group after the golf for appetizers and the no-host bar. There will be a raffle.

     Staged by the WRBSA for 10 years, the benefit golf gathering for the third year is named for longtime valley baseball supporter James Nelson, who died March 19, 2011 at 42.

     He was the youngest brother of five boys in Ray and Marian Nelson’s Hailey family that founded the Ray Nelson Little League baseball tournament in the early 1970s. The Nelson family has been involved in local youth baseball development at every level.
