Good over evil

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

The Boston Marathon Massacre was really hard to take last Monday as television channels kept running videos on the bombs going off near the finish line of the race. Evil continues to interrupt our everyday lives and makes it difficult to believe that we are a fair and enlightened world. It seems that every week, a new disaster occurs and shakes our confidence to the core. But, once again, the good deeds of spectators, police and emergency responders overshadowed those who perpetuated this cowardly, evil act. We will recover once more like we always do when faced with evil—good will prevail.
Here in Blaine County we are blessed with people and organizations that combat the everyday evils of life—poverty, illness, hunger, crime, ignorance and hate. They do it quietly every day assisted by your neighbors who volunteer their time and money to confront these evils. Of all the numerous nonprofit organizations in the area, none commands our respect more than the Hunger Coalition.
For the last 10 years, these folks have provided solutions to those of us who have been faced with their own personal economic disasters. They do it without fanfare and assist people who for a variety of reasons are temporarily down on their luck. They accomplish their good will without embarrassing their neighbors who are in need of their services, explaining that pride should not keep people from getting a good meal in order to go on each day.
Last year, the Hunger Coalition provided wholesome food weekly to hundreds of local adults and children through their mobile food bank, distributed backpacks of nutritious food weekly to kids facing hunger over the weekends and served more than 6,000 free hot meals through their Lunch Connection program. They accepted more than 87,000 pounds of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread through food donations and set up times and places where folks could go and “shop.”
In our community, good prevails over evil day after day after day. We are so fortunate to live here.
    Nice talking to you.

Mr. Millspaugh still lives in a log cabin.
