Homemade bomb found in mailbox

Twin Falls bomb squad deactivates explosive device

By TERRY SMITH
Express Staff Writer

East Fork Road was closed for more than an hour Wednesday evening while a bomb squad from the Twin Falls Police Department deactivated a homemade bomb found in a mailbox on Hyndman View Drive.
Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey declined to discuss the device in detail but said it contained “propellant and shrapnel.”
The Sheriff’s Office was notified at about 4:30 p.m. when a caretaker at a home in the area discovered the device. The Sheriff’s Office and Ketchum Fire Department responded immediately to the call, determined that the device appeared to be a real bomb and cordoned off an area in the vicinity of the mailbox.

“They used a robot. They pulled it out, took X-rays of it, they rendered it safe.”

Ramsey said police notified the Homeland Security office in Boise, which assisted with the dispatch of the Twin Falls bomb squad.
The squad arrived at about 7:50 p.m. East Fork Road—in the mid-valley between Ketchum and Hailey—was closed from about 8 p.m. until 9:10 p.m. while the bomb squad dealt with the device.
“They used a robot,” Ramsey said. “They pulled it out, they took X-rays of it, they rendered it safe.”
The sheriff said the evidence, including the mailbox, was collected for investigation. He said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will assist with the investigation.
“Now we’re investigating and following up on any leads as to who may have placed a homemade bomb in a mailbox,” Ramsey said.
