WRHS softball doubles up Burley 7-6, 16-7

First home and GBC league wins

    Building a 6-1 lead and holding off a late Burley rally, the Wood River High School softball team earned its first home and Great Basin Conference league victories Saturday by a 7-6 score over the visiting Bobcats on the Hailey diamond.
    In the second game of the doubleheader, Wood River (11 hits) broke open a close 2-2 game with a six-run third and added four runs in the fifth en route to a 16-7 win—the first Wolverine sweep of the season.
    Coach Dale Martin said about Saturday’s wins, “We got some timely hitting and played pretty good defense.”
    An example of that defense (just 4 errors in 14 innings Saturday) came at a pivotal moment of the first game.
    With the score 6-6 in the Burley seventh, Bobcat third baseman Brooke Bowers ripped a screaming line drive that Tidwell stabbed at first base for the first out. Winning relief pitcher Britney Bradley (3-9) whiffed the final two batters to finish off two innings of work in relief of starter Ciceley Peavey (67 pitches, 7 hits, 4 runs).
    Three-sport athlete Bowers, strong and athletic, had doubled to start Burley’s bat-around five-run rally in the visitor sixth. Earlier this season, a batted ball by Bowers had broken the arm of Burley coach Tim Campbell.
    Tidwell (2 hits, 2 runs) opened Wood River’s game-winning rally in the home sixth with an infield single and advanced on Lacy Harrington’s wall-ball single. With one out Bradley (2 hits, 2 RBI) belted a ball off the fence to drive home Tidwell for a 7-6 Hailey lead.
    Wood River finished the game with 12 hits including two-hit efforts by Ashley Hicks, Kori Paradis and Harrington. Peavey added an RBI single and Rachel Conover’s fifth-inning single led to Wood River’s sixth run of the game. Piling up six of Burley’s 10 hits were 1-2 batters Aubrie Vale (3 hits) and Nichole Williams (3 hits).
    In the second game, Paradis smashed her first career home run to go along with two doubles. Bradley recorded her first complete-game victory of the season with a seven-hitter.
    On Friday at Burley, the Bobcats took advantage of seven unearned runs to slip past Wood River 8-4. The Wolverines led early 3-0 and pitcher Bradley limited Burley to just five hits, but four errors derailed the Hailey hopes.
    Hicks, Wood River’s soph shortstop, had a huge series at the plate (6-for-8, 3 doubles, 6 runs) against Burley. Other Wolverine batters on the attack were Tidwell (4-for-9), Harrington (3-for-10), Bradley (4-for-10), Conover (3-for-6, double) and Shea Goitiandia (3-for-6).
    Wood River (5-10, 2-6 league) hosted Minico of Rupert Thursday in Hailey and entertains last year’s GBC tournament runner-up Jerome Tuesday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m. for a “Senior Day” single game. The GBC 4A league tournament begins on Saturday, May 4.

Baseball team has home finale Friday
    Wood River’s varsity baseball team has its home “Senior Day” send-off Friday, April 26 during the home GBC doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m. with league contender Minico of Rupert at Founders Field.
    Coach Matt Nelson’s Wolverines couldn’t solve Burley righthanded pitcher Jackson Kunz in last Friday’s 7-1 home GBC loss at Founders. Kunz (89 pitches) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, whiffed seven and walked just one. Ripping two of those hits was Kunz’s counterpart on Wood River, pitcher Ben Williams (123 pitches, 10 hits, 4 BB, 4K).
    Burley posted a three-game league sweep over Wood River with 14-4 and 13-1 home wins on the Bobcat diamond Saturday.
