A state champion throwing down the gauntlet, other aspiring state track contenders showing their progress and several school records falling.
Last Thursday’s Carey Invitational track and field meet for 16 schools seemingly had it all—and pretty nice Idaho spring weather at that.
The Hagerman Pirates ran away with the boys’ team title with 154 points. It was as close as it could be in the girls’ standings, the Carey Panthers and Mackay Miners tying for first place with 89 points, just ahead of Rockland’s 88 points.
Carey senior Poncho Gamino broke a 42-year-old school record with a 46 foot and 2.25-inch shotput toss to finish second Thursday behind Idaho’s top-rated 1A shotput man, Hagerman junior Kade Kress. Gamino’s toss was a tad better than Dennis Rush’s 46-2 toss for Carey in 1971.
Murtaugh senior Troy Baynes (2:07.30) set a new school record winning the 800-meter run by 8.4 seconds. He also won the 1600m by 4.3 seconds.
Top point-getter of the entire meet was Mackay senior Bailey Woodbury. The reigning State 1A long jump queen, Woodbury captured Thursday’s long jump by 7.5 inches with a 15-2 leap, and she swept the sprints winning the 100m and 200m, and the 400m dash by 3.4 seconds.
Senior Jaide Parke of Carey enjoyed another outstanding distance meet. She won the 800m by 1.9 seconds, 1600m by 18.4 seconds and the 3200m by 78 seconds. Parke boasts the third-best Idaho 1A time in the 3200m this spring.
Carey’s girls in picking up six gold medals also won 4x100m and 4x200 relays and got a first-place 300m intermediate hurdles run by freshman Medin Cenarrusa.
Panther junior Luis Garcia captured second place in the long jump. Camas County of Fairfield had seconds from Isaac Simon (triple and long jump), Jordan Robles (discus) and Jerry Gonzalez (3200m).
Senior Brittani Hulme of Camas County won the high jump in 4-6. The Musher girls earned seconds from senior Stephanie Moore (long jump) along with juniors Jessica Lanier (discus) and Taylor Gorringe (shotput).
Castleford senior Logan Rector, the top 110m high hurdler among 1A boys this spring, easily won the two hurdles races Thursday. And Castleford senior Ty Zimmers captured the 100m and 200m dashes.
Next up: A Northside meet today, Wednesday at ISDB in Gooding followed by the Northside Conference Championships Wednesday, May 1 back in Carey. Top Carey and Camas County placers from last Thursday’s meet, along with complete team scores:
