School board to hear charter proposal

Mountain School seeking district approval

By TERRY SMITH
Express Staff Writer

The Blaine County School District board of trustees has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday for an update on a proposal to establish the private Mountain School near Bellevue as a state charter school.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at noon in the district office at 118 West Bullion St. in Hailey.
Mary Gervase, the Mountain School director, and other supporters of the plan first presented the proposal to the school board in November 2012. If eventually approved, the Mountain School would close in the spring of 2014 and the new school, with state funding, would begin operation the following fall as the Syringa Mountain School.
State law requires a lengthy review with public comment opportunities by the School District to consider a charter school proposal. Under Idaho law, a school district’s approval is not necessary for establishment of a publicly funded charter school within the district’s boundaries. If a school district won’t authorize establishment of a charter school, then it can be done by the Idaho Public Charter School Commission.
