Play, enjoy nature at Resources Camp

Outdoor week for kids 12-14

    What better place than the Sawtooth National Recreation Area to learn about nature in the full bloom of summer!
   Expert instructors challenge the kids ages 12-14 during the 54th annual Natural Resources Camp. The camp takes full advantage of the scenic setting just north of Ketchum by offering the fun of five nights of camping, outdoor activities and scientific explorations.
   This year’s hands-on camp is June 24-29 at the 7,100-foot Central Idaho 4-H Camp 18 miles north of Ketchum. The summer program dates back to 1959 and only the kids have changed since.
   Boys and girls sleep in rustic, unheated log bunkhouses and take field trips to learn about Idaho’s natural resources. They enjoy fireside sing-a-longs and compete against friends in the “Tournament of the Outdoors.”
   Sponsored by University of Idaho Extension and the Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts, the camp focuses on natural resources from wildlife and rangeland to forests, water and soil.
   Instructors from University of Idaho Extension and other agencies help campers develop new understandings of the Gem State’s natural resources through experiments and outdoor projects. Activities include hiking, fishing, volleyball and survival skills.
   The campers are encouraged to discuss and debate natural resources issues while learning responsibilities as citizens.
   Camp registration fee, which includes bed, board and all activities, is $235 per person by Tuesday, May 21. The fee goes up $20 for registrations made after May 21. There are no refunds for cancellations after June 11. Scholarships are available through soil conservation districts.
   The camp is limited to 90 youngsters who sign up and pay their fees. Transportation to and from the camp is the parents’ responsibility.
   Other agencies cooperating in the camp’s operation are USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Idaho Department of Lands, Idaho Soil Conservation Commission and USDA Forest Service.
