Busy weekend for home ball games

Snow cancels WRHS-Filer baseball

You know it’s time to call the players off the baseball field when it’s hard to find the white baseball in the white snow covering the outfield grass.
That’s pretty much what happened Tuesday as the Wood River High School varsity baseball team hosted the Filer Wildcats for a non-conference make-up game at Hailey’s Founders Field.
The game started in light snow and lasted 21 minutes and one full inning before home plate umpire Greg Townley waved the players off the field for a snow delay. The snow continued, and that delay lasted 18 minutes before Townley and umpire Brian Shields postponed the game for good.
Wood River High School athletic director John Rade indicated the game wouldn’t be completed because of other game conflicts during the relatively short spring season.
The score was tied 1-1 after one inning. Wood River starting pitcher Ben Williams was nicked for a single run in the visitor first on a Kaleb Whitlock RBI triple. Then Williams got the run back in the home half with his own RBI single into the outfield snow—driving home Nick Brunker, who had singled with two outs.
Seeking its first win of the season, Wood River will entertain the winless Burley Bobcats today, Friday, April 19 at 4:30 p.m. for a single game at Founders. Wood River goes to Burley for two Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Wood River High softball team hosts Burley for a Great Basin Conference doubleheader Saturday at 12 noon on the South Valley Sports Complex diamond.
