A little chilly for Wolverine golfers

     Monday proved to be a little chilly with wind, pretty typical of mid April in southern Idaho, when 20 high school golf teams gathered at Jerome Country Club for an 18-hole tournament.

     Wood River High School’s boys continued their early-season progress at Jerome. Callum Stearns carded a 90 and three of his teammates had 91s—Tyler Spence, Reilly Neel and Lane Coulthard. Michael Flolo came home with a 118.

     Thursday, Wood River boys competed in the Mountain Home Invitational at Desert Canyon Golf Course. Columbia’s Greg Law was the boys’ medalist with a 72, leading the Wildcats from Nampa to the team title (306 strokes) over Bishop Kelly of Boise (315).

     Wood River placed seventh as a boys’ team with 377 strokes. Hailey’s 18-hole scores were Tyler Spence 86, Reilly Neel 88, Lane Coulthard 99, Callum Stearns 103, Brandon Dolenar 104, Max Mihalic 105 and Michael Flolo 111.

 

Atkinson Park field use meeting is April 24

     Mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 24 if you or your organization plans to use Ketchum’s Atkinson Park for competitive and fun league play in the summer of 2013.

     The annual Atkinson Park field use meeting is April 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the park’s Rec Building. You must attend the meeting and/or contact park recreation supervisor John Kearney to register your interest in using the facility.

 

Hailey Coed Softball coaches’ meeting is April 25

     Hailey Coed Softball League director Mike Beall has called for the annual coaches’ meeting to take place Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wicked Spud in Hailey. Call him at 720-6842 for more information.

    

FIS Development race results from Sugar Bowl

     Seven Sun Valley alpine ski racers were in the field of 119 men and 60 women for International Ski Federation (FIS) Development Series technical races April 11-14 at Sugar Bowl, Ca. Top result for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation was KJ Savaria’s fifth place (17th overall of 116 starters) among U-18 (ages 16-17) racers in Saturday’s men’s slalom.

     The following are Sun Valley class placings by race:

     · U-18 men: KJ Savaria 14-GS, 20-GS, 5-SL (17th overall), DNF-SL; Parker Scott 19-GS, 16-GS, 16-SL, 11-SL (31st overall); Tanner Josey 35-GS, 27-GS, 29-SL, DQ-SL; Payton Anderson 44-GS, 44-GS, DNF-SL, DNF-SL.

     · U-21 women: Amanda Stelling 9-GS, 7-GS (21st overall), 10-SL, DNF-SL.

     · U-18 women: Veronica Gaspar 27-GS, 17-SL, DNF-SL.

     · Seniors (overall): Jasmine Campbell 34-GS, 34-GS, 29-SL, 36-SL.

 

CampRainbow Gold benefit golf is April 27

     The eighth annual Camp Rainbow Gold fund-raising golf tournament has been scheduled for Saturday, April 27 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start at Club 93 Golf Ranch in Jerome. Call Doug D’Andrea at 720-5812 for details and registration.

 

Freeman wins men’s 50k national title

     New Hampshire’s Kris Freeman, 32, of Maine Sports Center won his third straight U.S. Long Distance Cross Country Championships 50-kilometer title Thursday at Royal Gorge, Ca.

     In slow snow on a warm day, Freeman (2.24:52) won the 31-mile classic mass start race by 54 seconds in a field of 45. Two years ago in Sun Valley, Freeman took the 50k classic title by nine seconds in 2.37:05.

     SVSEF Nordic racer Patrick Johnson placed 11th overall Thursday in 2.30:20, 5:28 off Freeman’s winning pace. Former SVSEF racer and University of Utah senior Miles Havlick was 13th in 2.31:14.

     Men’s SuperTour pacesetter Mike Sinnott, 28, of Ketchum and the SVSEF was 20th in 2.35:48 and SVSEF Nordic Gold Team head coach Colin Rodgers finished 26th in 2.40:40. In the 20k junior men’s race for 16 finishers, U.S. Paralympian Omar Bermejo of Hailey placed 16th overall in 1.31:29.
