Feldman starts bike season with TT win

     Back on the road outside of Boise Sunday, April 14 were Idaho bicycle racers testing their spring legs in the Jason Broome Memorial Time Trial competition on a 10-mile course 15 miles east of the capital city.

     Ketchum’s Richard Feldman, 44, of Durance-Colnago team and no stranger to the top of the time trial podium, led 74 finishers with a final time of 20 minutes and 26 seconds.

     Masters 35-plus racer, Feldman won by 9.5 seconds over Men’s Category 1/2 Kai Applequist, 31, of Boise.

     Feldman is the reigning Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Master World Time Trial king, having won his third TT title in a row and seventh world championship overall last Aug. 23 on a 15.69-mile course at Wartburg, South Africa.

     Top female out of 16 in Sunday’s interval start race that started near the Stage Stop Truck Stop was 37-year-old Sarah Barber of Boise in 24:03, good for 26th overall.

     Reigning national time trial queen Patty Puz, 74, of Sun Valley, also riding for Ketchum-based Durance-Colnago, was 73rd overall in 34:04. She ended up as the 15th female.

     Winning the Men’s Category 4 class and placing 14th overall was Durance-Colnago racer Nate Galpin, 37, of Hailey in 22:31.

     New to the road biking scene, Josh Kantor, 30, of Ketchum, finished second in Men’s Category 5 Sunday and was 43rd overall in 25:48.

     Sunday’s race was the first of three events and the only time trial in the George’s Cycles of Boise 2013 Spring Race Series. Other races:

On Sunday, April 28: The Chicken Dinner Road Race on 60-mile and 48-mile courses south of Nampa.

Sunday, May 5: The Emmett Roubaix on 75-mile and 55-mile courses starting from Emmett City Park.
