Hailey hops with live music this week
    Kansas’ gift to “gothgrass,” aka the Slaughter Daughters, are being showcased for no cover at the Sun Valley Brewery on Thursday, April 18, bringing what critics describe as a their raw, soulful style.
    Cece Honey and Ari Rose are the band. With Rose on mandolin and Honey on rhythm guitar, the Slaughter Daughters are said to “hammer out modern-day folk anthems about the dark side of life, with a heartfelt sincerity few others can match.”
     The Marshall Poole band brings traditional rock ’n’ roll laced with modernism and kickback, take-it-easy blues, Friday, April 19, at 8:30 p.m. at the Brewery. Again there is no cover. Set up strategy to tackle weeds
    Weeds out of control?  
    Learn both traditional and alternative strategies for controlling noxious weeds in small and large landscapes Friday, April 19, from 9-11 a.m. at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden.
    This event is free and will cover application strategies, weed identification and use of bio-control and goats.  
    The event is hosted by the Blaine County Weed Department, University of Idaho Agricultural Extension office, Wood River Land Trust and the Sawtooth Botanical Garden. Pesticide application credits are available.

Spring chorale tour includes Ketchum stop
    Pacific Lutheran University’s School Chorale 2013 Spring Tour will include a performance at Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood this weekend.
    The free concert program, on Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m., will feature music spanning several centuries and genres, including works by Edvard Grieg, Felix Mendelssohn, Stephen Paulus, Moses Hogan and Eric Whitacre. The conductor is Brian Edward Galante.
    The Pacific Lutheran University Chorale is a mixed choir composed primarily of freshmen and sophomore singers representing a variety of academic disciplines. The choir tours regionally and appears on PLU Christmas compact discs.

Workshop reading of new play ‘Guiding Light’
    The Liberty Theatre in Hailey will present at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, a free reading of its newly commissioned piece, “Guiding Light” by Clay McLeod Chapman. Following the success of Company of Fools’ first commissioned play by Clay McLeod Chapman in 2009, “Commencement,” the company chose to preform another Chapman play. This new play features a character named Tabitha, who is able to communicate with the spirits of soldiers who died in the line of duty—or so she says.

Live music, poetry gatherings soothe slack
    Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum will hold up the town’s spirits with spirits and live music this weekend.
    On Friday, April 19, it’s Eliquate, a five-piece, California beat rock troubadour group with an arsenal of rhymes and rhythms to dance to. The show starts at 9 p.m.
    Then, Saturday, April 20, The Maw Band takes the stage at 9 p.m. This acoustic rock/funk band counts Modest Mouse, Jack Johnson, Colin Hay, Neil Young and other leading legends as influences.
    Celebrate Poetry Month Friday, April 19, at Iconoclast Books with a Poetry Slam from 7-9 p.m. in Ketchum, or at Cowboy Cocina in Hailey for a Poetry Café at 7 p.m.
    Old Death Whisper plays at the Silver Dollar Saloon at 9:30 p.m. Friday.
