School district honored for music education

NAMM Foundation recognizes ‘outstanding commitment’

The Blaine County School District is one of 307 districts in the United States to have been recognized this year by the NAMM Foundation with a Best Communities for Music Education designation.

The foundation, headquartered in Carlsbad, Calif., is a nonprofit organization that seeks to strengthen music education in schools and communities nationwide.

In designating the Blaine County School District as a Best Communities for Music Education, the foundation found that the district has an “outstanding commitment” to music education and “demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum.”

“This is a reflection of community support for music education in our schools as well as our outstanding educators, students, parents and community partners who work so hard to make music education a highlight of Blaine County education,” district Superintendent Lonnie Barber stated in a news release.

“Receiving this award gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the difference between state funding and local funding of public schools,” Barber stated. “It’s because of the support that our community shows through local funding that we have music specialists in every school and that we can give students these kinds of opportunities, and we are grateful for that.”
