Proposed bike race would be bad for Baldy

I would like to first applaud the Sun Valley Co. marketing, events and promotions people who have done a remarkable job over the past couple of years creating the revitalized energy at Dollar and River Run and all of the great events during winter and summer. For the sake of brevity, I’ll just say kudos to all involved, in the forefront and behind the scenes.

Now I’d like to condemn the work of the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance for its brazen lack of regard for our valley. These “out-of-towners” are, under the guise of bringing in business, pimping our town with disregard for what we stand for. The website and marketing use slang terminology to openly encourage people to drink and party in our streets and on our trails. They are openly proposing that we become like Whistler and Vail. Be careful what you wish for.

The Super-Duper Enduro being proposed without any public comment is in reality four full-length downhills down Baldy and the Bald Mountain Trails! It is a Skid Festival that is certain to washboard and rut our trail system! It is also a death wish for contestants and any uphill traffic that had plans for the Fourth of July weekend!

I love to go fast more than anybody (see Willy Cook photo from 2012 Fourth of July weekend captioned “Mountain bike pioneer Dave Harrison wins Sun Valley All Mountain title.” I suggest we first open this proposal to public comment, check the insurance policy, consult again with the Forest Service, Sun Valley Co. and the people of the Wood River Valley. A true “enduro” Mountain Bike Race in the traditional European sense is a two-day event involving a cross-country and a fun 15- to 20-minute Super D, using the same equipment.

Please join me in allying against this Baldy Skidfest! There is a cross-country race at Soldier Mountain that weekend and a true European-style enduro being presented by the Wild Rockies race series out of Boise. Let’s choose not to destroy our trails and endanger our guests.
