Minico slips past WRHS tennis 7-5

Success among girls lifts Spartans

The Minico Spartans are off to a strong start in the Great Basin Conference prep tennis season. They proved it Thursday with a 7-5 home league win over the reigning league champion Wood River Wolverines.

Minico swept girls’ singles and mixed doubles and won the girls’ team title 5-1. The Wood River boys dominated doubles with a pair of straight sets wins and earned a 4-2 victory in the boys’ standings at Rupert.

The match of the day for Wood River occurred in No. 1 girls’ doubles. Alex and Samantha Taylor dropped the first set 7-5 to the very strong Minico pair of Monica Farfan and KeAndra Harris, then the Taylor sisters came back to sweep the next two sets 6-1, 6-0.

Stephen Pfeiffer and Taylor Cooper played clean tennis to capture boys’ singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3, and the teams of Josh Morell-Cole Caminiti and Erik Wilander-Danny Graves didn’t drop a game in winning matches.

Wood River hosted Burley and the Community School Tuesday, then has another home league match with Jerome Thursday, April 11.

- Boys’ singles: 1—Stephen Pfeiffer (WR) 6-0, 6-1 over Cameron Jackson (M). 2—Derek Wilkins (M) 6-4, 6-2 over Drew Morse (WR). 3—Taylor Cooper (WR) 6-1, 6-2 over Michael Vandever (M).

- Girls’ singles: 1—Eva Molik (M) 6-2, 6-3 over Lily Richards (WR). 2—Kaylean Hawkes (M) 6-3, 6-2 over Josie Potts (WR). 3—Karen Hansen (M) 6-4, 6-1 over Cassidy Miles (WR).

- Boys’ doubles: 1—Cole Caminiti-Josh Morell (WR) 6-0, 6-0 over Brenton Kloepfer-Travis Halverson (M). 2—Erik Wilander-Danny Graves (WR) 6-0, 6-0 over Fernando Santana-Abraham Ortiz (M).

- Girls’ doubles: 1—Alex Taylor-Samantha Taylor (WR) 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 over Monica Farfan-KeAndra Harris (M). 2—Stacie Sanderson-Bailey Staley (M) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 over Tate Morell-Alex Feldman (WR).

- Mixed doubles: 1—Willemstad Bradford-Lyndon Mittlesteadt 6-3, 6-2 over Miles Remington-Audrey Brassil (WR). 2—Joshua Evenson-Amber Long (M) 7-6, 6-3 over Max Mauldin-Riley Kilmartin Schmidt (WR).
