Rockets break tie in OT for Hutch Cup title

Four games coming up April 7

They needed overtime to settle Sunday’s B+ Hockey League championship game for the coveted Hutch Cup between the top-seeded defending league champion Aardvarks and No. 5-seeded Rockets.

And the Rockets (8-6-3) pulled off the 4-3 upset at Sun Valley Skating Center when Greg Townley scored the game winner 2:30 into the extra stanza capping a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Aardvarks (10-4-3) completed another fine season but settled for second place this time.

Townley scored two goals to go with single goals for the new champions by Todd Avison and Shaun Kelly. Will Hemmings lit the light twice and Josh Green once for Aardvarks.

In Sunday’s B+ consolation game, No. 6-seeded Flounders (7-10-2) completed their late-season charge with a 4-2 victory over the No. 3-seeded Hutch’s Bad Dogs (8-8-2).

John Baker scored a three-goal natural hat trick for the winners and Chris Salvatierra added one goal. Scoring for the Bad Dogs were Mark Elsbree and Lacie Hernandez, assist to Rob Prew.

Earlier, the B League completed its tournament with two games—the Racers nipping the Wild 4-3 for the league championship and the Blues taking the consolation title 3-1 over the Flyers.

Lori Johnston nabbed the game-winning goal for the Racers, assisted by Amy Anderson, with three minutes left in regulation time. Joe Marx tallied two goals and Brent Vanbueren added a single for the Racers.

For the Wild, Bege Reynolds had a goal and two assists. Also scoring goals for the Wild were Lia Johnson and Mark Bucknall.

Trent Stumph of Blues had two goals and Brenda Moczygemba one for the B champs. Assists went to Ned Wheeler and Jeff Lamoureux. Ben Worst accounted for the Flyers goal, assisted by Bryan Furlong and Janet Salvoni.

Winners of the 2013 Apple/Sammis jerseys for spirit and dedication to hockey were Stu Backstatter and Donna Doan. The tournament is named for the late Mark Hutchison, a longtime recreational hockey player here.
