In the first big track and field meet of the spring season for southern Idaho small schools, the Carey High School girls threw down a marker in the sprints, distances and relays Thursday during the 14-school Valley Invitational meet at Kimberly High School.
Carey senior distance runner Jaide Parke swept the 800-meter, 1600m and 3200m runs. Senior McKayla Mecham and freshman Kelsey Barker won 200m and 100m dashes, respectively. Carey added wins in 4x100m and 4x200m relays and finished a close second to the Raft River Trojans from Malta.
The Raft River girls countered Carey’s strengths with 32 hurdles’ points and 42 in the field events to nip the Panthers by a 124.5 to 123 score in the final meet standings. Oakley’s 52 field points lifted the Hornet girls (122.5) into third place.
Besides Parke, outstanding girls were Oakley senior Paige Cooper, winner of the high jump, long jump and triple jump, and Raft River junior hurdler Kami Freestone. She swept the 100m high and 300m intermediates at Kimberly.
The Raft River boys from Malta out-distanced Hagerman 121-115 for the boys’ team honor at Kimberly. Carey’s boys and Hansen tied for sixth place with 35 points apiece. Panther senior Francisco “Poncho” Gamino gave Carey its best result with a second place in the shotput.
Multiple boys’ winners were Castleford seniors Ty Zimmers (100m, 200m) and Logan Rector (110m high hurdles, 300m intermediates by big margins), and Murtaugh senior Troy Baynes (800m, 1600m, 3200m).
Carey returns to Kimberly for the Monte Andrus meet Thursday, April 11 and hosts the Carey Invitational Thursday, April 18 at Derrick Parke Memorial Field. Top placings from Kimberly:
