    When this circus rolls into town, you’ll be looking for the elephants, but stop looking and start listening and you’ll hear the sounds that will put you in an equally festive state of mind, and that’s no elephant dung. And any fan of 1980s bands like Zapp and Morris Day and the Time will get a nostalgia boost, too.
    The James Douglas Show will play Friday, April 5, at Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum. Tickets are $5 and doors open at 9 p.m.
    The Show is the gutsy, Roots-esque featured house band for NBC-syndicated “The After-After Party,” hosted by hit television show “Breaking Bad” star Steven Michael Quezada.
    The James Douglas Show (The JDS) brings a vibrant fusion of “funk-’n’-soul-’n’-rock-’n’-roll.”
    The Show’s co-founder and drummer, Marco Nunez, stepped out of the fray to answer some pre-concert questions from the Idaho Mountain Express.
    
IME: Who’s involved in the Show?    
    We have Zach Fowler on bass, Delmone Taylor on sax, vocals and keys, Jessie Martinez on guitar and Mike Cee on keys. And, of course, me, and James Douglas is the Show’s ringleader.

I just started listening and I got nostalgic for the ’80s high school years with Prince and Morris Day. Is that intentional? Is that insulting?
    Insulting? Never! We’re happy to be mentioned in such great company. It wasn’t intentional, for sure—however, all were big influences on the band. I also think that anytime you create a hybrid of funk, rock, R&B, etc., it’s always going to be reminiscent of the groups and artists who came before. Like I said—just happy to be mentioned in such great company.

You take a lot of time providing commentary and backstory for your music. Why?
    I want people to know where we came from—our influences and day-to-day issues that plague a band like us on the road.

Have you heard about any babies that resulted from your more mellow tunes?
    I’ve heard about lots of lovemaking but no babies that we know of yet. Only the practice sessions.

You’ve opened for a very diverse collection of acts. Why do you think your music works with other genres so well?
    I think people these days just want to have fun and be entertained. When we play with a country artist, they love us because we’re different than what they’re used to. And everyone seems to just like to party and dance. And that’s what we bring to the party—the ability and necessity to have an amazing time.   

What’s your show like?
    It’s never that same. We try and change it up as much as possible every night. We want fresh new energy to share with our fans.

What are you bringing to Ketchum?
    The circus! Monkeys and all! It will be a funk explosion!
