Trustees to consider construction budgets

Levy spending to be discussed at special meeting

Express Staff Writer

Budgets for two Blaine County School District construction projects will be considered by the board of trustees at a special meeting set for noon Thursday at the district office in Hailey.

Also as part of the agenda, district Business Manager Mike Chatterton will discuss spending to date of a 10-year $59.8 million plant facilities levy approved by Blaine County voters in 2009. Chatterton will also provide salary comparisons between the district and other districts in Idaho.

Both construction projects, one for Wood River Middle School and the other for Hemingway Elementary School, are listed as action items for the meeting. Chatterton will be seeking final budget approvals for the work, scheduled to begin this summer.

The middle school project, estimated at $1.6 million, involves building a new wing on the east side of the building for eight new classrooms.

At Hemingway, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems will be replaced, a new drainage system will be installed on the east side of the building to prevent winter ice buildup and some of the bathrooms will be remodeled.

Chatterton said the budget estimate for the Hemingway work is $2,255,226. That number is significantly lower than a $3.4 million preliminary estimate provided at a March 12 school board meeting by project engineer Brian Formusa, who said he arrived at the estimate by comparing the Hemingway work to a similar project done earlier by McKinstry Essention at Bellevue Elementary School.
