Ski season starts winding down

River Run base area, Seattle Ridge to close Sunday

Sun Valley’s skiers and snowboarders are enjoying springtime on the slopes as the resort begins to wind down its ski lift service for the end of the 2012-13 winter season.

Now that the more serious, competitive portion of the season is over, the area’s alpine sports enthusiasts have begun to don fun and funky garb and equipment—such as goofy hats with flowing dreadlocks; neon, one-piece snowsuits from the ’80s; and ridiculously short skis.

On Sunday, Sun Valley Co. closed Dollar Mountain for the season following an active last weekend of “Dollar Dayz” on the hill, including the CandyGrind Rail Jam on Saturday and the fourth annual Cold Bowl Pond Skim on Sunday. The Orage Masters, a wacky, self-described “anti-competition” will take place on Dollar on Saturday, April 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a concert by local favorite rockers Old Death Whisper. Resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said spectators are welcome to watch for free, but the lifts will only be open to competitors.

On Bald Mountain, the resort closed the Lookout (the so-called “chair to nowhere”) and Cold Springs lifts on Monday. According to a recent resort news release, the resort plans to keep 10 lifts open through Sunday, April 7: River Run, Lookout Express, the gondola, Christmas, Frenchman’s, Challenger, Greyhawk, Seattle Ridge, Mayday and Kinderspielplatz.

However, starting April 8 until Baldy’s scheduled last day on Sunday, April 14, the resort plans to run only the Challenger and Christmas lifts until the weekend of April 13-14, when it plans to reopen the Greyhawk lift. That means the River Run base and Seattle Ridge will be closed that week. Lift access will only be available at the Warm Springs base.

The release states that River Run and Seattle Ridge lodges will continue food service through April 7, though Seattle Ridge Lodge began to “limit” its service on Monday. Sibbach said that means that some of the food stations at Seattle Ridge are closed. Lookout and Warm Springs lodges will continue food service through April 14.

Sibbach said those dates are all subject to change, depending on the weather.

“That’s the plan for now,” he said. “If it snows or gets cold, we’ll see what happens.”

Rock ‘n’ the Sun Concerts

The resort’s springtime Rock ‘n’ the Sun concert series has two free, Saturday afternoon shows left this season. On April 6, The Bernie Worrell Orchestra will play at River Run and on April 13, Diego’s Umbrella will take the stage at Warm Springs. Both shows start at 4:30 p.m. The resort will serve food and drinks outdoors during the shows.
