Art brings perpetual spring to hospital

    You don’t have to be a patient at St. Luke’s Wood River to enjoy flowers; for the near future, guests and patients will be able to enjoy a new art exhibit at the hospital celebrating spring with a vibrant show featuring flowering plants.
   The “Flowering” show now on display at the main hospital in Ketchum displays imagery of plants with an emphasis on floral plants. The exhibit features renowned local painters, photographers and mixed-media artists.
   Some of the artists in the current exhibition are Ginny Blakeslee Breen, Melissa Graves Brown, Helma Cherian, Jen Galpin, Lisa Holley, Thia Konig, Steve Padgett, Paulette Phlipot and Valerie Stewart.
   These works, many of which are available for purchase, are in the main lobby and Local Artist Galleries of St. Luke’s.
   In addition to the rotating gallery exhibits, St. Luke’s art collection is composed of more than 200 pieces of permanent and long-term-loan fine art. The collection is an array of contemporary art and includes paintings, photographs and sculptures donated to the medical center or on long-term-loan from local art collectors. The works can be seen throughout the hallways, in waiting areas and patient rooms. The art program has been part of St. Luke’s since 2000, when the new hospital was built.
   An additional contribution to the hospital’s ambiance was made by the Community School’s third-grade class, which donated funds for an art display box to showcase student artwork.
   The student art display box was funded by the young philanthropists in conjunction with WOW Projects, a local organization committed to educating students about the importance of generosity.
   The students crafted the first student art exhibit, which features adorable “ugly dolls.” The students imagined, stuffed and stitched the dolls themselves. The art display box will continually rotate student artwork to spread good cheer throughout the second floor of St. Luke’s.
