Ketchum URA follows strange selection process

Did you know the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency is in need of a commissioner? The position became available in December when City Councilwoman Nina Jonas resigned. The bylaws of the Ketchum URA state: “In the event that a Mayor or Council member resigns from the Agency Board but continues to hold office, a successor Commissioner shall be filled by a majority vote of the Board to hold the position for the remainder of the resigned member’s term.” The term for the now empty seat ends Dec. 31, 2013.

In late January, I saw an ad in the Mountain Express asking for anyone interested in serving as a KURA commissioner to submit a request by Feb. 8. After some consideration, I sent in my résumé. I never got a response. A month and a half after the deadline for submittal, I attended the monthly URA meeting on March 18. I asked the board where they were in the process, and why hadn’t I received any response. Despite my meeting the required qualifications, Chair Mark Eshman informed me that no appropriate candidates had applied and he would not place any application on an agenda for the commissioners to review until a candidate with specific, desired, characteristics was found. So much for due process.

And how many applications did they receive? Only one, mine. I asked Mr. Eshman if my application would be considered. Since I am legally qualified, he said it would, but then invited me to withdraw my name. I declined.

Three months have passed with little effort to fill Nina’s empty URA seat. “We’re in no hurry” and “This is not a priority” were the reasons given. The search has been extended indefinitely.
