Ski, snowboard news from the slopes

Hobson Memorial returns Friday

It’s school vacation and many families are out of town, but Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine ski teamers who are still here are looking forward to the 36th annual Hobson Memorial races.

They are scheduled for Friday, March 29 to be run like a NASTAR event on Baldy’s Arc Park ski run. SVSEF U-12 Travel head coach Adele Savaria encouraged participants to come dressed in costumes for the spring event.

Starting time for the Hobson Memorial is 10 a.m. Friday. Ski team end-of-season awards and Hobson trophies will be given out at 1 p.m. at Apple’s Bar & Grill, along with cake and lemonade. Entry fee is $10. Sign up by Wednesday, March 27. Get a sign-up form at


U-16 Western Regions in Alaska

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation racers Haley Cutler, Samantha Busby, Taylor Cooper and Jay Fitzgerald led the way for the 14 SVSEF competitors during the U-16 Western Region Alpine Ski Championships March 19-21 at Alyeska, Alaska. There were 91 men and 84 women in the field.

Cutler scored a bronze medal with a third place in Thursday’s super giant slalom, while Busby won bronze in the giant slalom series opener March 19. Cooper placed eighth in slalom and Fitzgerald was 11th in Thursday’s SG finale. Other 11th-place SVSEF finishes came from Stockton Troyer (GS) and Austin Savaria (SL).

SVSEF placings by race for the ages 14-15 event:

- U-16 men: Taylor Cooper 8-SL, DNF-GS, 15-SG; Jay Fitzgerald 27-SL, 21-GS, 11-SG; Austin Savaria 11-SL, 24-GS, 37-SG; Stockton Troyer DNF-SL, 11-GS, 43-SG; Yuri McClure 32-SL, DNF-GS, 19-SG; Emmett Say 30-SL, 35-GS, 65-SG; Trenor Gould 40-SL, DQ-GS, 61-SG; Duncan Fuller DNF-SL, 30-GS, 48-SG; Tanner Riedel DNF-SL, 12-GS, 49-SG; and Will Snyder DNF-SL, DNF-GS, 31-SG.

- U-16 women: Haley Cutler 8-GS, 11-SL, 3-SG; Samantha Busby 3-GS, DNF-SL, 13-SG; Madison Milgard 36-GS, 46-SL, 58-SG; and Royce Rheinschild 58-GS, DNF-SL.

Rev Tour wraps up on Dollar

Halfpipe and slopestyle competition on Dollar Mountain wrapped up a five-day U.S. Revolution Tour for snowboarders and skiers last Thursday and Friday. Top SVSEF Snowboard Team result came from Chase Josey, fourth of 39 riders in the pipe and fifth of 69 in Friday’s slopestyle. Sun Valley’s Ryan Roemer finished 23rd in Thursday’s halfpipe.


USSA Masters Nationals at Big Sky

Anna Droege, Nancy Auseklis, and Corneil Therrien posted a rare Sun Valley sweep of their Women’s Class 10 (ages 70-74) group in the giant slalom event at the USSA Phillips 66 Masters Alpine Nationals staged Friday at Big Sky, Mt.

Droege, 73, and Auseklis, 71, are perennial medal winners at nationals, but Therrien, 72, retired from racing some years ago. Yet Therrien stepped in to race and complete the sweep topped by gold medalist Droege (2:15.89), silver medalist Auseklis (2:16.33) and bronze medalist Therrien (2:25.08).

Over 300 U.S. racers competed in downhill, super giant slalom, GS and slalom.

Six racers from Sun Valley won gold medals, including Auseklis (downhill), Droege (SG/GS), Virginia Reed in Class 12 (80-84), Keith Thompson, John Campbell and John Droege. Nine Sun Valley racers won a total of 26 medals. In addition to the above winners, Heather Black won four medals, and Cliff Cunha took bronze in the slalom. Others competing included Steve Slivinski, Drury Cooper, Bob Sarchett and Frank Ward.


Ski Club, Baldy Cup final race is Sunday

The final Sun Valley Ski Club race of the 2012-13 season, and final Baldy Cup race is Sunday, March 31 on Warm Springs. It will be a dual parallel giant slalom that is age handicapped meaning, the older you are, the less fast you need to go. All are welcome. Sign up in Warm Springs Lodge from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Sunday. First run is at 10 a.m. with awards to top finishers.
