Aardvarks make Hutch Cup final

The top-seeded Aardvarks have qualified for the Hutch Cup B+ Hockey League tournament championship game scheduled for Sunday, April 7 at Sun Valley Skating Center.

Aardvarks (10-3-3) defeated the No. 6-seeded Flounders (4-10-2) by a 4-1 score in Sunday’s first-round action and will now sit back and wait for the results of further tournament action.

Josh Green, Will Hemmings, Clark Shafer and Dave Klemer (empty net) scored for Aardvarks. John Baker scored the Flounders goal, assisted by Terry Crawford and Chris Peterson.

In other action Sunday:

( No. 5 Rockets (6-6-3) upset the No. 2 Vipers (9-7-0) by a 3-2 score in an overtime shootout. Greg Townley (1 assist), Bryan Speth and Todd Avison scored for Rockets, Gretel Kearney assisting. Dan Choma and Scott Seaward lit the light for Vipers, assists to Baird Gourlay and Dave MacCormack;

( Baba Street scored twice and Steve McCoy notched four assists helping No. 3 Hutch’s Bad Dogs (8-6-2) past the No. 4 Sharks (7-9-0) by a 4-2 score. Lacie Hernandez (2 assists) and Rob Prew also scored for the Bad Dogs. Bill Sprong and Nic Thomas scored for Sharks.

Sunday’s games set up the second-round match-ups for the Hutch Cup tournament.

Coming Sunday, March 31 on resort ice: At 6:30 p.m., No. 6 Flounders vs. No. 4 Sharks; at 7:45 p.m., No. 5 Rockets vs. No. 3 Hutch’s Bad Dogs; and at 9 p.m., No. 2 Vipers vs. the winner of the earlier Flounders-Sharks elimination contest.

The winner of this Sunday’s Vipers vs. Flounders/Sharks game will advance into the Hutch Cup consolation final Sunday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m.

And the winner of this Sunday’s Rockets-Hutch’s Bad Dogs semi-final contest moves into the Hutch Cup championship game against the Aardvarks April 7 at 7:45 p.m.
