Woman gives $5K to DI program

Funds being used to purchase Spanish language books

    Dual Immersion Program students at Hailey and Woodside elementary schools are receiving $5,000 worth of Spanish language books, thanks to the generosity of part-time Blaine County resident Jane Watkins.
   The donation was made to the schools through the Blaine County Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the Blaine County School District.
   In the Dual Immersion Program, students are instructed half in English and half in Spanish, with the goal of helping them become fluent in both. In a press release, the foundation reported that Dual Immersion students “spend a significant amount of their school day reading and learning in Spanish and this grant will greatly increase the number of Spanish language books available to them.”
   The foundation reported that Watkins’ donation was motivated by her love of books and by the fact that government funding for education continues to dwindle. The donation to the Dual Immersion Program will give the students greater variety in choices of reading in Spanish.
   “I want books available for kids who want to read,” Watkins stated. “It’s a joy to be able to do this.”
