Strong finish for girls, boys in Utah hockey

U-14 girls, PeeWees claim third place

The Sun Valley Youth Hockey U-14 won their final three games at the Spring Fling girls’ hockey tournament March 15-17 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Winning their final three games to place third, Sun Valley Youth Hockey girls enjoyed an amazing weekend March 15-17 during the Spring Fling girls’ hockey tournament at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Two of the victories Sunday came on coach Chris Benson’s St. Patrick’s Day birthday.

The first was a 3-0 shutout over McCall with goals by Jeni Sobieski (assist Megan Johnson), Sophie Nasvik (shorthanded) and Sobieski again. Suns goalie Evi Johnson made four saves for the shutout and finished with 86 for five games.

Sunday’s second triumph in the third-place game was 2-1 over Salt Lake City Lightning. Goalie Johnson made 17 saves and the game “shamrock” went to Brianna Maestas. Goals came from Nasvik (Taylor Hebert) and Denali Stevens (assists Sobieski, Sydney Roberts).

The Suns streak of wins began Saturday evening with goalie Johnson stopping 25 shots in a 1-0 victory over Salt Lake City Lightning. The game-winning goal came from game puck recipient Denali Stevens.

In preliminary games, Sun Valley lost 3-0 to Team Wyoming and 4-1 to Colorado. Goalie Johnson made 30 saves against Team Wyoming and earned the game puck. Game puck winner Sobieski scored the only Suns against Colorado.

Winner of team jerseys for overall great weekend play were defenders Morgan Benson and Kasey Johnson. Also skating were Abigail Benson, Abby Robideaux and Anik Zarkos.

 

Placing third in the March 15-17 Spring Fling tournament with a dramatic 7-6 shootout victory over a Utah squad was the Sun Valley Youth Hockey PeeWee team (ages 11-12).

Also playing in the Utah Spring Fling tournament and placing third was the Sun Valley Youth Hockey PeeWee team (ages 11-12) coached by Chris Zarkos and John Stevens.

Sun Valley went 3-2 and earned third place with a dramatic 7-6 shootout victory over a Salt Lake City squad.

In the shootout win, Sun Valley jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Salt Lake fought back tying the game with 3:30 remaining in regulation time, then the Utah sextet grabbed the lead with 33 seconds left.

The Suns then pulled their goalie for a neutral zone face off. Center Tiernan Naghsh won the face-off and got the puck back to defenseman Jack Stevens who found Barrett Ott all alone on the far wing.

Ott took a quick shot on goal and after a brief scrum in front of the goal, forward Ike Buxton was able to push it past the goalie with just 0.2 seconds left in regulation time.

Tiernan Naghsh scored on the second shootout shot and goalie Seth Askew was perfect in the extra frame stopping all three Utah shots he faced.

Goals in the third-place game were scored by Ike Buxton 3, Tiernan Naghsh 2, Jack Stevens 1 and Max Erickson 1. Assists went to Max Erickson, Jon Driscoll and Tiernan Naghsh (2).

In Sun Valley’s first game, Team Wyoming took away a 4-1 victory despite a goal by Naghsh, assisted by Erickson.

Sun Valley then defeated Idaho Falls 6-2 on goals by Jon Driscoll (2), Ike Buxton (2), Luke Marcouiller and Max Erickson 1. Assists in that game went to Teagan McAvoy, Jon Driscoll and Max Erickson.

Erickson, Barrett Ott and Buxton scored for the Suns in a 3-2 triumph over Salt Lake City Lightning. In the Idaho team’s fourth game, Salt Lake City Regulators claimed a 4-1 victory despite an Erickson goal, from Naghsh.

Weekend scoring (18 goals scored, 18 against): Erickson 4 goals/3 assists; Naghsh 3/3; Buxton 6/0; Driscoll 2/2; Stevens 1/0; Marcouiller 1/0; Ott 1/0; and McAvoy 0/1.
