Two Blaine County School District board of trustee seats now held by Chair Steve Guthrie and Trustee Paul Bates will be up for election in May.

Both Guthrie and Bates confirmed this week that they plan to seek re-election.

The School District announced Monday that it is accepting “declarations of candidacy” and that the candidate-filing deadline is Friday, March 22, at 5 p.m.

Declaration of candidacy information is available through Board Clerk Laurie Kaufman at 578-5003 or lkaufman@blaineschools.org. Kaufman also has an office at the district office at 118 W. Bullion St. in Hailey.

The district advised that being a trustee requires a significant time commitment. In 2012, 47 regular and special meetings were held. Further, school board members typically attend numerous school functions, training sessions and meetings with school administrations and the community.

School board members serve without pay.

Both Guthrie and Bates were elected to their posts in 2009 and have served as trustees since July of that year. Guthrie was selected board chair by his peers in July 2011, replacing former Chair Julie Dahlgren, who did not seek re-election that year.

Guthrie represents Zone 2, which encompasses the south Hailey area. He was elected to his post in a three-way race, receiving 131 votes of 246 votes cast. Attorney Jim Laski placed second with 88 votes and incumbent Trustee Kim Nilsen, who served on the board for five years, placed third with 27 votes.

Bates represents Zone 4, which encompasses west Ketchum and areas north and south of the town on the west side of state Highway 75. He won his post by defeating incumbent Alexandra Sundali, who then served as board chair, by 256 votes to 214 votes.

Trustees must reside within the zone they represent. School District zone maps and boundary descriptions are available at the district website at www.blaineschools.org.

The trustee election will be held in conjunction with the state primary election on May 21.
