Jivaro, Sturges headed for Thursday clash

In Outlaw League

Jivaro Headhunters and Sturges Productions/Sawtooth Brewery are headed for another showdown in the Blaine County Recreation District’s Men’s Basketball League.

Defending tournament champion and No. 1 seed Jivaro (13-1) and No. 2-seeded Sturges Productions (11-3) won their quarter-final games Sunday at Hailey’s Community Campus gym and advanced into the semi-final game of the 10-team tournament. That game is scheduled for Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. on the Hailey hardwoods.

The two teams clashed in last year’s Outlaw League tournament finale, Jivaro capturing its fifth league title in six years 71-41 over Sturges.

This year, Jivaro slipped past Sturges 55-47 in January. The Headhunters won their first eight games this season before dropping their only contest in an upset, 83-81 to No. 7 Thornton Heading/Muleshoe Saloon (6-8).

Sunday, Jivaro’s Jeff Stedman scored 26 points leading the champions past No. 5-seeded Coeneo/Merrick Construction (8-6) by a slim 57-54 margin. Ricardo “Papas” Paredes paced Coeneo with 17 points.

Sturges/Sawtooth Brewery stayed unbeaten in tournament play 62-45 over No. 3 Elevate (10-4). Bryan Tidwell had 18 points for Sturges, and Logan Knight led Elevate with 17.

The tournament field was narrowed to four teams after Tuesday’s loser bracket playoffs featuring Elevate and No. 9 Power Engineers (5-11), followed by Coeneo vs. No. 6 Rocky Mountain Hardware/Soundwave (6-8).

The winners of those two games will try to stay alive Thursday at 8:45 p.m., after the Jivaro-Sturges tilt.

Rocky Mountain/Soundwave stayed alive Sunday 75-63 over No. 8 Sun Valley Auto Club/Growing Concern (4-11). Bryan Burrell poured in 15 points for Soundwave, and Pat Woodbury had 16 for the Auto Club.
