Junior Nationals kick off in Alaska

Nordic skiers at Birch Hill, Fairbanks

Norwegian cross-country skiers along with juniors from Alaska and New England led the way Monday at Birch Hill in Fairbanks, Alaska where the 2013 USSA Marriott Junior Nationals began for 358 racers.

Tiril Weng (14:19) and Lotta Weng, 16-year-old twins from Lillehammer, Norway in the J1 (ages 16-17) class, went 1-2 in women’s freestyle interval start 5-kilometer to beat the top Older Junior (18-19), who was Alaska’s Stephanie Kirk.

McCall’s J1 Annika Miller clocked the best result, sixth overall of 109 OJ/J1 women, just 1:08 back of Tiril Weng.

Another 16-year-old J1, Mattis Stenshagen of Norway’s Lillehammer NTG Club, won the men’s OJ/J1 10k skate race in 26:34. Monday’s J2 (ages 14-15) winners on the 5k courses were Katharine Ogden of New England in 15:35 and Max Donaldson of Alaska in 13:30.

The Lillehammer skiers won’t get medals or points in the team standings since those are reserved for U.S. skiers.

Top results of the 15 Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation racers competing for the Intermountain Division came from Zach Williams (20th, 1:09.5 back) and Peter Wolter (24th, 1:18.9) in J2 men; and Maggie Williams (19th) in J1 women.

Junior Nationals continued Tuesday with classic relays, followed by freestyle sprints Thursday, March 14 and classic mass start 15k/10k/5k races on Saturday. Visit for details.
