Ski racers invade Mammoth, Mission Ridge


Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine racers KJ Savaria and Kyla Miller podiumed with third places Monday in downhill races of the U.S. Alpine U-18 National Championships staged at Mammoth Mountain, Ca.

Their efforts capped a week that began March 5 with a slalom win by 17-year-old Kipling Weisel of Sun Valley. Savaria clocked the third-best time of 68 starters. Here are Sun Valley’s U-18 placings by race:

- Men: KJ Savaria DNF-SL, 29-GS, 3-DH; Kipling Weisel 1-SL, DNF-GS, 26-DH; Will Harder DNF-SL, DNF-GS, 29-DH; and Parker Scott 27-SL, 33-GS, 39-DH.

- Women: Kyla Miller 28-SL, 12-GS, 3-DH; Mackenzie Bachmeier 20-SL, 8-GS, 13-DH; Linnea Baysinger 22-SL, 24-GS, 6-DH; and Jordan Fitzgerald 36-SL, 22-GS, 20-DH.

 

Western Region Junior Championships

Mission Ridge near Wenatchee, Wash., was the setting for the six-day Les Schwab Western Region Junior Championships. SVSEF racers competed in two super giant slaloms, two giant slaloms and two slaloms from March 5-10.

About 280 ski racers were in Wenatchee to compete in two classifications—U-18 (ages 16-17) and U-21 (18-20). They were competing for spots in the U.S. National Championships.

Highlights: Former SVSEF racer Miles Sweek, 20, of Hailey and the Mission Ridge Ski Team tied for second place of 118 starters in the March 6 men’s SG; U-21 Ali Gunesch placed fourth in her class in the March 6 women’s SG; and U-21 Sofi Leroux placed 3-4 in her class in March 9-10 women’s slaloms.

SVSEF placings by class, race and day:

- U-21 women: Sofi Leroux 12-SG, 13-SG, 8-GS (11th overall), 7-GS (9th overall), 3-SL (6th overall), 4-SL (7th overall); Amanda Stelling 7-SG (10th overall), 7-SG, 11-GS, DQ-SL, 11-SL; Ali Gunesch 8-SG, 4-SG (5th overall), 14-GS, 11-GS, 11-SL, 14-SL; and Taylor Gilliam 15-SG, 17-SG, 18-GS, 20-GS, 12-SL, 17-SL.

- U-18 women: Jenna Lou Jansky 25-SG, 18-SG, 22-GS, 22-GS, 30-SL, 35-SL.

- U-18 men: Marc Leroux 9-SG, 4-SG (12th overall), 10-SL, DNF-SL, 10-GS, DNF-GS; Ben Kanellitsas 11-SG, 9-SG, DNF-SL, 15-SL, DNF-GS, 14-GS; Tanner Josey 27-SG, 35-SG, 22-SL, DNF-SL, 25-GS, 23-GS; Payton Anderson 47-SG, 62-SG, DNF-SL, 31-SL, 56-GS, DNF-GS; and Logan Shipley DNF-SG, 50-SG, 38-SL, 29-SL, 27-GS, DNF-GS.
