Arnot, Harpham among top women at Catalina

Challenging marathon trail run

Training for her fifth Mount Everest ascent, 29-year-old Ketchum resident Melissa Arnot was among 412 finishers in Saturday’s Catalina Island Conservancy Marathon 26.2-mile run in California.

Arnot arrived home as the ninth female finisher and fourth in the Women’s 25-29 age class with a time of 4.17:00. She placed 55th overall. The women’s winner was Stephanie Wurtz, 30, of Colorado Springs, Colo. in 3.26:14, seventh overall.

The hilly and challenging point-to-point off-road marathon from Two Harbors to Avalon on the island of Catalina off the coast of Los Angeles featured 4,310 feet of elevation gain and spectacular views.

Arnot appeared with fellow local mountaineers Ed Viesturs and Peter Whittaker on Thursday at a Zenergy-sponsored program about climbing in Sun Valley, and then traveled to Los Angeles for Saturday’s marathon. The Whitefish, Mt. native plans to summit Everest again early this spring.

Bellevue’s EJ Harpham, 56, won the Women’s 55-59 class and placed 69th overall, the 16th female Catalina Marathon finisher, in 4.22:16. She was right behind Rick Stark, 55, of Bellevue, who was 68th overall and seventh in the Men’s 55-59 class with a 4.21:54 clocking.

Another local finisher at Catalina was 44-year-old Ivana Radlova of Hailey, fifth in Women’s 40-44 and 151st overall, the 40th female, in 4.57:59.

Accompanying Arnot to Catalina was her husband, Sun Valley Suns co-captain Jon Duval. His father, 68-year-old Lou Duval of Winchester, Mass., traveled to southern California and also finished Saturday’s 26-miler in 5.13:00, good for second place in the Men’s 65-69 class and 184th place overall. The men’s winner was Ken Myers, 33, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada with a time of 3.03:48.
