Silver Creek plan is wrong approach

As a 30-year Silver Creek fly-fisherman, I would like to give the “rest of the story” regarding the proposed massive reconstruction of the Kilpatrick Pond.

The lower portion (below the Kilpatrick Bridge) is to be wholly dewatered, killing the thriving insect population and trout habitat. After that is done, the bottom will be scraped to create an island 570 feet long and 100 feet wide consisting of the aquatic weed and insect content of the stream. In the process, the world-class rainbow and brown trout population will either die or be shunted downstream to the Purdys’ private fishing club.

This portion of the stream is protected by a Nature Conservancy “gift deed of perpetual conservation easement” entered into by The Nature Conservancy and Picabo Cattle Co. and dated Jan. 13, 1995. The “prohibited actions” section of the agreement places restrictions on draining, dredging, shoreline alteration, channeling and the “manipulation or alteration of any natural water course” (Section B, Item 12). The stated objective is to remove silt, and that is a reasonable concern. However, there are many more conservative and environmentally friendly methods to accomplish that goal.

We have a world-class blue-ribbon fishery thriving in a delicate environment. The massive, heavy-handed proposal will forever affect negatively this national treasure we know as Silver Creek.
