School board to consider top contracts

Barber and 13 other administrators up for renewal

The Blaine County School District board of trustees will consider a one-year extension to the contract of district Superintendent Lonnie Barber at its next meeting Tuesday.

If extended, Barber’s contract would be in place until July 1, 2016. His current contract terminates July 1, 2015.

In Idaho, school superintendents typically work under a three-year contract, with an additional year added annually. Barber was hired under a three-year contract when he became superintendent in 2009, and his contract has been given one-year extensions for the past three years.

Other school administrators work on one-year contracts that typically end at the beginning of a fiscal year on July 1.

Consideration of Barber’s contract is listed as a separate “discussion/action” item on Tuesday’s meeting agenda. Consideration of contract renewals for 13 other administrators will be dealt with in the “consent agenda,” though all 13 are listed on the meeting agenda. The 13 include three district administrators, eight principals and two assistant principals.

The administrators are Assistant Superintendent John Blackman, Director of Curriculum Kathleen Budge and Director of Student Services Debi Gutknecht.

Principals up for contract renewal are Hailey Elementary School Principal Tom Bailey, Silver Creek High School Principal Mike Glenn, Hemingway Elementary School Principal Don Haisley, Woodside Elementary School Principal Brad Henson, Wood River High School Principal Pete Jurovich, Bellevue Elementary School Principal Angie Martinez, Carey School Principal John Peck and Wood River Middle School Principal Fritz Peters.

Assistant principals are Robert Ditch and Keith Nelson, both employed at Wood River High School.

In other business, the school board will consider final budget approval for work planned for Wood River Middle School and Hemingway Elementary School.

The middle school plan is to build an extension on the eastern part of the existing building for eight new classrooms. A preliminary budget estimate is $1.58 million.

The Hemingway work would involve replacement of the heating, venting and air conditioning system and other improvements. The cost was estimated earlier at $2.83 million.

Funding for both projects would come from a $59.8 million plant facilities levy approved by Blaine County voters in 2009.

The board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the district office at 118 W. Bullion St. in Hailey. A complete agenda is available at the district website at www.blaineschools.org.
