The buzz is racing

Hear the buzz? It’s racing. For the second year in a row, college skiers and boarders are racing on Bald and Dollar mountains and at the Sun Valley Nordic Center.

The 35th annual U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association National Championships have brought nearly 100 men’s and women’s teams from 64 colleges across the nation to Sun Valley this week. These men and women love winter sports and are the best hope for growing individual winter sports in a couch-potato nation that desperately needs them.

It’s great to have the collegiate racers back in town in what are arguably the best racing venues in the U.S. Baldy racers will learn this week that there’s nothing like Warm Springs’ 3,000 feet of vertical unobstructed by flats. Dollar competitors will find a challenging half-pipe and great boarder- and skier-cross courses. Nordic racers will find Trail Creek’s vistas incomparable.

Last week, Sun Valley Resort devoted a lot of time and energy to making sure the racing venues were buffed and ready. For far too long, anything more than regional racing had dropped off Sun Valley’s radar, but last year’s arrival of college competition ended that dry spell.

Racing began in earnest Tuesday and will run through Saturday. Schedules are online at www.uscsa.com. Residents and visitors alike should spend some time taking in the events and supporting the athletes. Who better to appreciate them than mountain people who live and breathe skiing and boarding? Spectators will be treated to some amazing performances by some of the best college athletes around.

What’s good for racing is good for the Sun Valley area. It’s great to be back on the map.
