Boy Scouts take aim at National Jamboree

Grange Hall fundraiser Movie Night to show ‘Wreck-It Ralph’

Local Boy Scouts are raising money during “Movie Nights” at the Grange Hall in Hailey to fund travel expenses to the Boy Scout National Jamboree in West Virginia this summer.

There are about 125 Boy Scouts ages 7-18 active in the Wood River Valley. Those raising money to go to West Virginia will show “Wreck-It Ralph,” a computer-animated family comedy, at the Hailey Grange Hall on Friday, March 8, at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and concessions will be sold, including hot dogs, candy and popcorn.

 “Scouting experiences help prepare the boys for their future by building self-confidence, reinforcing ethical standards and providing service to others,” said Scout mother Debbie Bothwell.

Scouts who attend the jamboree will spend one day doing community service and work on completing a variety of merit badges, which get them closer to obtaining the ultimate goal of Eagle Scout. 

“They will have great adventures and learn valuable leadership skills that carry over to their academic lives and influence them in their adult life after Scouts,” Bothwell said.

At the Grange Hall event, the Scouts will offer for sale a variety of survival “paracord” bracelets that they have made. They will cost $5 each.

Bothwell said the cost of attending the jamboree is $3,000 per person for the 20-day trip.

“We’ve raised almost $2,000 collectively so far,” she said.

Bothwell said the value of Scouting lies in what is taught to Scouting troops.

“It’s very easy to become just an athlete, especially in this valley,” Bothwell said. “But it’s something more to be expected to follow the Boy Scout oath: ‘On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and obey the Scout law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.’”

Bothwell said the Scouts who attend the jamboree will have reached a new level of responsibility.

“They will travel in a patrol, which functions as a unit led by an assigned patrol leader and assistant patrol leader,” Bothwell said. “They will work together as a team. The leader’s job is to simply watch to make sure all goes smoothly.”
