Resort plans to close Baldy April 14

Sun Valley Co. nears 400K skier-day goal

Sun Valley skiers and snowboarders only have about 40 more days to enjoy the 2012-13 winter season before the resort closes its ski hills for the summer.

Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach said Monday that the resort will likely keep Dollar Mountain open through Easter Sunday, March 31, and plans to keep Bald Mountain open through Sunday, April 14.

“Those dates are subject to change depending on the weather,” he said.

According to Sibbach, if the mountains close on those dates, this year’s ski season will be about average in length. Baldy opened on Nov. 24 last season and closed on April 15. This season, it opened on Nov. 22. Sibbach also said the resort is “happy” with this season’s skier-day numbers so far, which he said are slightly up from last year.

“We always like to hit the 400,000 mark,” he said. “Whether we’ll do it this year or not, I’m not sure, but I think we’ll be close.”

Sibbach said the resort’s mountain department is doing an “amazing job” managing the snow on Baldy and Dollar and that the mountains are “skiing great.”

May opening for resort golf

As the days grow warmer, lighter and longer in the Wood River Valley, Sun Valley Co. has begun to prep its links for the summer season. Resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said Monday that the resort has started clearing some of the snow off the greens with snow blowers and shovels and will continue to do so for about another two weeks. He said that’s typical for this time of year, but that golf season is “still pretty far off.” Resort Head Professional Dominick Conti said Monday that the resort generally opens its Elkhorn, Trail Creek and White Clouds golf courses on May 1, and he expects that will be the case this year as well. “But it all depends on the snowmelt and how quickly the golf courses dry out,” he said.
