District sets DI information meetings

Incoming kindergartener parents invited to hear about program

Parents with children who will be in kindergarten next year are invited to hear about the Blaine County School District’s Dual Immersion program at meetings later this month in Ketchum and Hailey.

The first meeting is set for Monday, March 18, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Hemingway Elementary School library in Ketchum. The second meeting is set for Wednesday, March 20, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Community Campus in Hailey. The same information will be presented at both meetings.

The district’s Dual Immersion program, now in its 12th year, offers instruction half in English and half in Spanish, with the intention that students will become fluent in both languages. Students initially enroll in Dual Immersion as kindergarteners and then continue with it throughout their school years.

The district’s initial Dual Immersion students, who started with the first classes in 2001, are now in the 11th grade.

The upcoming meetings are being held prior to kindergarten registration, which is scheduled for April 3. If too many students register for Dual Immersion, the district holds a lottery to determine which students can enroll.

As it currently stands, the district will be reducing its Dual Immersion enrollment by about 12 percent as changes are made with the program at the beginning of the 2014 school year. Under a plan approved by the district board of trustees in January, Hemingway Elementary School will retain Dual Immersion classes, while Dual Immersion students from Hailey and Bellevue elementary schools will attend a Dual Immersion “magnet school” at Woodside Elementary School.
