Lefty’s ousts Morgan’s 6-1 in Gund playoff

Will meet Grumpy’s in Tuesday’s final

Defending Gund Cup tournament champion Lefty’s Bar & Grill started the 32nd annual Senior “A” Hockey League season-ending playoffs as the fourth seed out of four teams with a 2-10-0 record.

So you could call Tuesday’s 6-1 Lefty’s win over top-seeded Morgan’s Fine Finishes (8-5-0) something of an upset, though it seemed more like a rout.

In a match-up of last March’s Gund Cup finalists, Lefty’s got single goals from six players and moved into the Gund Cup championship game Tuesday, March 5 at 8 p.m. at Sun Valley Skating Center.

Lefty’s will face off against Sun Valley Auto Club/Grumpy’s (8-5-0), an 8-3 semi-final winner over Yoga College (7-6-0) also on Tuesday.

Anything can happen in the single-elimination playoffs, and that seemed to be the case in the Lefty’s-Morgan’s meeting.

Scoring for the winners were Christ Cook, John Kearney Jr., Ivars Muzis, Don Saver, Bobby Sloper and Matt Ward. Each goal scorer except for Ward also assisted. The Morgan’s goal came from John Ellison Jr., assisted by Chris Benson and Tyler Hanson.

Grumpy’s broke out to a 3-0 first period lead over Yoga and stretched it to 5-1 after two.

Frank Salvoni, Ryan Kolquist and Vilnis Nikolaisons (1 assist) each scored two goals for Grumpy’s. Other scorers were Rune Haavik (1 goal/2 assists), Tuck Hall (0/1), Bryan Speth (0/1), Mark Stone (1/1) and Harry Weekes (0/1).

Yoga scorers were Bryan O’Connell (2/0), Kris Webster (1/1) and Mark Belanger (1/1).
