Girls make All-League hoops teams

Carey High School girls’ basketball coach Merrilee Sears, who led the Panthers to their first-ever league tournament title, has been named “Coach of the Year” for the 1A Division 2 Northside Conference District 4 league.

Sears guided Carey to a 17-7 record and the consolation tournament title of the State 1A Division 2 tournament Feb. 16.

Making All-Conference first team: Jaide Parke and Morgan Parke of Carey, Charley Bingham and Kendra McConnell of three-time state champion Dietrich, and Stephanie Moore of Fairfield’s Camas County.

Second teamers were Jacey Shaw and Cheyenne Hubert of Dietrich, Mariah Lezamiz and Danielle Edwards of Richfield, and Brooklyn Vander Stelt of Lighthouse Christian.

Honorable mention went to Whitnee Hurless and Brittani Hulme of Camas County; Timberly Flick of Dietrich; Sam Edwards, Kailee Scott and April Wood of Richfield; Sierra Harr, Kylie Weekes and Bailey Buffington of Castleford; Hannah Walker and Estafany Altamarano of Bliss; and Mikayla Albers and Dana DeKruyf of Lighthouse.

 

Tidwell makes GBC first team

Wood River High School senior post Sydney Tidwell has been named to the Great Basin Conference All-Conference first team for the recently completed 2012-13 girls’ basketball season. Tidwell led the Wolverines in scoring with a 10.8 ppg average.

GBC “Player of the Year” was Twin Falls senior post Mikayla Harris. “Coach of the Year” was Nancy Jones of Twin Falls. She led the conference runner-up Bruins (17-10) to a 42-36 upset win over three-time defending State 4A champion Middleton in the opening game of this year’s state tournament and thus ended Middleton’s national-best 72-game winning streak.

Joining Tidwell on the first team were Twin Falls junior guard Kaitlyn Merritt plus three players from GBC champion Burley—seniors Aubrie Vale and Brooke Bowers, and junior Chelsee Baker.
